Author(s): Ashu Ahirwar and Priya Senger
Abstract: Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s contributions to the ideas of social justice, democratic equality, and economic self-reliance remain fundamental to understanding India’s political and developmental trajectory. This review synthesizes scholarship across political theory, economics, sociology, and constitutional studies to examine how Ambedkar’s intellectual work continues to shape, and challenge, contemporary India. By analyzing primary texts such as
Annihilation of Caste (Ambedkar, 1936)
[1],
States and Minorities (Ambedkar, 1947)
[2], and Constituent Assembly debates (Ambedkar, 1948)
[3], as well as secondary scholarship from the last five decades, this paper argues that Ambedkar’s integrated framework grounded in liberty, equality, fraternity, state intervention, land reforms, labor rights, constitutional morality, and education offers powerful insights for confronting persistent caste discrimination, economic inequality, gender injustice, and democratic backsliding in India. Using a thematic, qualitative review method, the paper concludes that Ambedkar’s thought is not only historically foundational but essential for imagining a more inclusive and egalitarian India.
