Abstract: The Nattukkottai Chettiyars, also known as the Nagarathars, are one of the most influential trading communities in South India. Their origins trace back to early Tamil merchant guilds such as the Aynurruvar, Nanadesi, and Manigramam. Over centuries, they built an extensive economic network linking Tamil Nadu with Sri Lanka, Burma, and Southeast Asia. Their commercial success was complemented by a strong sense of faith and social responsibility. The Chettinad region, where they later settled, reflects this heritage through its architecture, temples, and charitable institutions. This paper examines their progression from the early Nagaram settlements to the organised Chettinad society, with a focus on trade, migration, and cultural identity.
