Transgender lives on screens: A cinematic exploration of struggles, strengths and acceptance of Transgender lives in Tamil cinema

Author(s): S Muthamil Muthalvan and Y Srinivasa Rao

Abstract: The portrayal of transgender in Tamil cinema has evolved significantly over the decades, reflecting broader social attitudes and cultural shifts. Historically marginalized, transgender were often depicted through stereotypes, reinforcing negative connotations of deviance and abnormality. However, recent Tamil films have begun to explore more nuanced and authentic representations, showcasing transgender as multidimensional characters with agency, dignity, and complexity. This change reflects the growing awareness of transgender rights and issues within Indian society. The shift is also influenced by the activism of transgender communities, media discourse, and cultural movements calling for better representation. This paper examines the changing portrayals of transgender characters in Tamil cinema, highlighting key films, trends and their implications for social acceptance and visibility.
