Akbars artistic diplomacy: European influences in Mughal paintings
Author(s): R Sumesh
Abstract: Mughal paintings, a unique art form that flourished during the Mughal Empire in the Indian subcontinent, experienced significant European influences during the 16th and 17th centuries. The Mughal rulers, known for their patronage of art and culture, were exposed to European art through trade and diplomatic relations. This led to the assimilation of certain elements of European art into Mughal paintings, resulting in a distinct fusion of styles. European engravings and prints brought to the Mughal court inspired the depiction of European landscapes, architecture, and costumes in Mughal artworks. European motifs and iconography, such as Christian imagery, were also occasionally incorporated into Mughal paintings.
