Artisans of the valley: Exploring Manipurs Crafts and Industry from the 10th to 17th Century CE

Abstract: The present study is to critically analyse the different crafts and industries prevailing in Manipur valley from 10th Century CE to the 17th Century CE which is very beneficial for understanding the non-agrarian sector of the economy in Manipur. The crafts of Manipur were best represented by its intricate design and patterns. It is also evident that the traditional crafts and industry in Manipur evolved in its own course or got revolutionised in its own way. Traditional folk tales, mythology and beliefs also influence the crafts and industry of the state. Except a few, most of the crafts are unknown to the world. So, attempt has been made to comprehend this. We also observed the transition from a clan-based chiefdom to a state in Manipur during this period. Local chronicles such as the Cheitharol Kumbaba, Loiyamba Shinyel, Ningthourol Lambuba, etc. will be consulted. This paper will also discuss how the traditional crafts and Industry (pottery, salt manufacturing, bamboo crafts, textile and weaving, etc) effect the economy of Manipur in the given time period. Special reference will be given to King Loiyamba and King Khagemba.
