Dharmsangh Shikshamandal: Where back to the Vedas became a living reality
Author(s): Prabhat Kumar
Abstract: This paper explores the vision, evolution, and legacy of Dharmsangh Shiksha Mandal, founded by Swami Hariharanand Saraswati (Karpatriji) in 1946. Rooted in the ancient gurukul tradition, the institution sought to revive Vedic education as a moral and spiritual pursuit, emphasizing dharma over material gain. Drawing inspiration from Karpatrijis formative years under eminent gurus, the Mandal integrated scriptural study with disciplines like grammar, philosophy, astrology, and Ayurveda. Unlike state-controlled systems, it rejected governmental funding to safeguard cultural autonomy. Though its ideals of character refinement and spiritual knowledge were lofty, the initiative faced limitations in outreach and recognition, with low enrolment persisting. Nevertheless, the Mandal remains a symbol of resistance to colonial educational models and a living testament to the continuity of traditional Vedic learning.
