Author(s): T Khaikhogin Chongthu

Abstract: The Kukis were innately blessed with an institution of patriarchal chieftainship, and history has recorded it. And, their Chiefs are known more so by their trait of leadership. Their captainship in the Anglo-Kuki War (1917-1919) is testament to their proven and time-tested leadership-no less enviable to Captain Coote, a British Military juggernaut against whom they fought. By and large, the Chiefs were the protagonists and the villagers, who were eager to express their disenchantment against the British, had thrown in their lot with the chiefs as their leaders. The war had witnessed a significant display of both traditional and modern war technology, tactics and symbols. Therefore, this paper aims to discussed about the role of the chiefs, technology, tactics, strategies and symbols of War during the Anglo-Kuki War 1917-19, particularly from the perspective of the Kukis.
