An historical view on the identity of Mughals in India: Invaders or colonisers?

Abstract: By walking through roads of Mughal architectural exquisites in Delhi, I could realise that the monuments signify not just the artistic beauty but a diligent sense of political rule and social construct. The chapter of Mughals in the medieval Indian history is always impressive of this contribution in creating a composite culture in India with its political, economic and cultural contribution for years. But the question comes when we think about the fact that, Indians are proud of the Mughlai contributions and think of it as their indigenous heritage but the same is not with the European powers who held the political power following the decline of Mughals in India. The contributions of the English, irrespective of their intentions behind it is seen through a colonial lens, carrying a colonial tint to it, in spite of its significance. Whereas the Mughal contributions are seen through the lens of Indian heritage though they were foreigners to India too. So, is history partial? This article is an attempt to dive in to this question which is lingering my mind despite the neutral opinions of the historians in the same.
