Environmental ethics in Indian thought: Ancient answers to modern environmental challenges

Author(s): Sasmita Bargah

Abstract: Environmental ethics lays out ethical norms which govern human relations with the natural environment. Ethical norms also known as moral obligations include the standards of conduct that indicates what is morally right and wrong, guides a human behavior in a society or profession. Environmental challenges like; global warming, climate change, environmental pollutions, deforestations, burning of fossil fuels, etc are regarded as the critical factors which directly or indirectly human beings and other species badly. Ancient Indian philosophical thought, laid groundwork for environmental ethics by emphasizing the interconnectedness of humans and nature, promoting reverence for all living things, and advocating for a harmonious relationship with the environment, often seen as a divine or sacred entity. Many Indian philosophical and religious traditions, including Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, and Budhism view the environment as a living system where humans are part of, rather than separate from, nature. The Indian religious philosophical thoughts for environmental ethics were governed by three principles viz Karma, Dharma and Moksha. This perspective contrasts with anthropocentric views that prioritize human interests over the environment. These philosophical and religious traditions have influenced Indian culture and society, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility and promoting sustainable practices. While the modern world faces significant environmental challenges, the principles of environmental ethics rooted in ancient Indian philosophy can provide valuable insights and guidance for addressing these issues.
