Structural constraints and gendered exclusion: Women's political participation in Kerala

Abstract: Despite being a fundamental pillar of democracy, women's political participation in India remains markedly low, even in Kerala, a state often celebrated for its high human development indices, including elevated female literacy and health standards. This paper explores the paradox inherent in Kerala's socio-economic progress and its persistent failure to ensure equitable political representation for women. It critically examines women's involvement across various tiers of governance, with particular focus on their limited presence in state and national electoral processes. Through an analysis of the intersections between patriarchy, political structures, and policy frameworks, the study seeks to identify the underlying factors contributing to the marginalisation of women in Kerala's political sphere, while also proposing strategic interventions to address this representational deficit.
