Abstract: This article analyses the providence of Gandhian model of education, popularly known as “Nai Talim” for independent India. The narrative for Indian education was built around in the lean period of nationalist activity in 1937. The scheme called the “Basic Model of Education or Wardha Scheme” was drafted by Gandhi’s emissary Dr. Zakir Hussain. The major debate on the future of Indian education began with the Hartog Committee recommendations in 1929, wherein Gandhi proposed the “Nai Talim” as a counter to the ills of western education on psyche of Indians. Finally in post-independence India this idea was implemented. The article aims to discuss the circumstances that led to the implementation of the Basic Education Scheme and its consequences on the Indian education system.
