Study on social life of the people of Gond tribe of Nuapada district in Odisha

Abstract: The present article aims to focus on different aspects of the social life of the Gonds of Nuapada district of Odisha. The social life of the people of Gond tribe is an important aspect of the tribal social organisations of Odisha, which have vertical and horizontal dimensions. Gond society is vast and widespread in the western part of Odisha.The social life of the Gonds of Nuapada district is related to the forest and all the social activities of the Gondsare based on their living style. Gondi is the tribal/local language spoken by the Gond people of Nuapada. Mother tongue Gondi belongs to the Indo-Dravidian language family.The Gonds primarily communicate within their own groups in their mother tongue. However, when interacting with outsiders, they commonly use a mixed language known as Chhattisgarhi Hindi.Although, Gond’s settlements are presently found in the Nuapada District, but its people originally came from central India to the Nuapada district of Odisha. The Gond family mainly consists of parents and only unmarried sons and daughters are considered family members. However, in recent times the inclusion family system has been rapidly disappearing and the individual family system has taken its place. Different categories of marriages are found prevalent in the Gond Community of Nuapada district of Odisha. Both men and women of the Gond community of Nuapada district of Odisha wear a variety of ornaments on different parts of their bodies. Educationally, the Gonds of the Nuapada district are very backward, for which both the central and state Governments have taken adequate steps for the development of education among the Gond children of Nuapada district. Due to the implementation of various government developmental schemes in Gond villages, the social and cultural life of the Gonds in Nuapada District has undergone significant changes compared to their previous natural lifestyle. The information obtained from both the primary and secondary sources are methodologically utilized by the authors in this article.
