Abstract: The article examines the rise and decline of chief merchants in seventeenth-century Madras, highlighting their individuality, social authority, and political influence. This article shows how, acting as intermediaries between European companies and local networks, figures like Kasi Viranna enabled trade expansion until Company centralization reduced their power.
