Oppositional politics in Odisha legislative assembly (1952-1977): A historical study

Abstract: The existence and judicious operation of a vigilant, viable and responsible political opposition is necessary for the success of parliamentary democracy. In a developing democracy like India, co-operation with the Government, not confrontation should be the key-note of Oppositional politics. Odisha is a developing state and there is a slow development after Independence. One of the reasons ascribed to its slow development is political instability in the state during initial years (1947-1977) after India’s freedom. This paper attempts to explore the oppositional politics in Odisha Legislative Assembly from the commencement of first General Elections in 1952 to the end of National Emergency in 1977. Role of political parties including National and Regional as the Chief and Minor oppositions in Odisha Legislative Assembly have been highlighted in this paper. This paper covers a detail study of the position of all political parties in Odisha after each election since 1952 to 1977. The present paper also briefly highlights about the prominent opposition leaders of the state and their role in opposition politics in Odisha. Political scenario of Odisha after independence to the end of National Emergency has been shortly touched in this paper.
