From autonomy to unity: Reconciliation of princely states with independent India
Author(s): Swatanshu Shekhar Singh and Aryan Mewara
Abstract: The year 1947 marked India's independence from British colonial rule, but the unification of over 550 princely states presented a significant challenge. This paper examines the pivotal role played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru in the integration of these states. Patel’s pragmatic diplomacy and occasional use of force, alongside Nehru’s vision of a pluralistic, democratic India, proved essential in consolidating the nation. Focusing on key states like Jodhpur, Bhopal, Junagadh, and Kashmir, the paper explores the political and religious complexities involved. The successful integration laid the foundation for modern India’s territorial integrity, unity, and secular governance.
