Mughal-Sikh relations and the 18th-century Chamkaur battle: Insights from the Zafarnama

Author(s): Rohan Kumar Nirwan

Abstract: The Battle of Chamkaur, fought in Punjab around the early 18th century, was a pivotal clash between the Mughal Empire under Aurangzeb and the Sikhs led by Guru Gobind Singh. While the exact date remains uncertain, the battle's historical and moral implications are profound. Historically, the conflict was a culmination of tensions between the two groups. However, beyond the political ramifications, the battle also marked a shift in perspectives on bloodshed. The correspondence between Aurangzeb and Guru Gobind Singh, often likened to a Pir-Murid (teacher-disciple) relationship, offers new insights into the moral complexities of the event. This research paper aims to explore the moral dimensions of the Battle of Chamkaur by examining the political and spiritual ideologies of the era to a certain extent. By analyzing notions of loyalty, devotion, and love associated with the battle, we can gain a nuanced understanding of Mughal-Sikh relations and challenge simplistic portrayals of the participants. While primary sources often suggest a Khalsa victory, a closer examination reveals moral ambiguities on both sides. The Mughals, often vilified by historians, may have been motivated by factors beyond mere villainy. By delving into the complexities of human psychology, we can uncover the gray areas that shape historical narratives. Through this exploration, I hope to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the Battle of Chamkaur, one that transcends the black-and-white narratives that have dominated historical discourse.
