Queens, scholars, and warriors: The multifaceted role of women in medieval Andhra Pradesh

Author(s): Malla Pushpanjali

Abstract:
This research delves into the diverse roles played by women in Medieval Andhra Pradesh, shedding light on their significant contributions as queens, scholars, and warriors. Through an extensive review of historical records, literary texts, and contemporary scholarly works, the study highlights how these women navigated and often overcame the patriarchal structures of their time to assert their influence. Key figures such as Queen Rudrama Devi, the poetess Molla, and the warrior women from the Kakatiya and Vijayanagara dynasties are examined in detail. The research not only explores the political, cultural, and intellectual landscapes shaped by these women but also addresses the socio-political contexts that facilitated their rise to prominence. By focusing on both well-known and lesser-known women, the study presents a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted roles women played in shaping the region's history. The review also identifies gaps in current scholarship, particularly the need for more comparative studies and interdisciplinary approaches to better understand the systemic factors that influenced women's roles during this period. The study concludes by advocating for a more nuanced and inclusive historical narrative that recognizes the contributions of women in Medieval Andhra Pradesh, thereby challenging traditional male-centric accounts of the region's history.
