Sufism, handicrafts, and trade in Kashmir during fourteenth and fifteenth centuries

Abstract: The Concern of writing the present paper is to trace the developments in the field of trade and handicrafts in Kashmir during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. This article will highlight how Sufism shaped the handicraft technology and facilitated Kashmir’s trade relations with Central Asia. The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries were the period when Muslims from central Asia inflexed Kashmir as rulers, military adventures, traders, and mystics (Sufis). The Sufis of Central Asia were themselves skilled in various handicrafts. They came to Kashmir with central Asian culture and taught it to the local people of Kashmir which the later incorporated in their life style.
