The impact of colonial rule in the growth of education in 19th century Assam

Abstract: The state of Assam in India is lying between the latitudes 28° 18' and 24°N, and longitudes 89°46' and 97°4’ E. Assam is a rich state in natural resources. She is surrounded by eight states viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Sikkim and West Bengal and two countries viz. Bangladesh and Bhutan. Assam is famous all across the globe for its natural beauty, one horned rhino, tea, oil etc. The total geographical area of the state is 78,438 sq kms
[1]. Under the British domination, Assam comprised whole of present North Eastern India. Because of its political and economic importance, the region came under the British colonial rule after the Yandaboo Treaty of 1826. During the period of colonial rule, the region had different experiences and a new chapter in the history of education was started. Education plays the most important role in the development of a society. Assam being a backward state, the education has an important role to play in the overall development of the state. Here, the Colonial rulers had initially taken some steps for the spread and development of education.
