Religious history of ancient India: A historiography

Abstract: This essay presents a broad synoptic view on history writings on the study of religious history of ancient India. It makes an attempt to find an explanation about why scholars chose a particular approach to write the history and what compelled them to change their way of writings. The essay traverse from eighteen century to late twentieth century major writings on the study of Hindu religion in India. It started all from literary texts and moved on to archaeological remains, initially it was restricted only to the methodologies of history but by twentieth century interdisciplinary perspectives broadened the horizon of writing histories of religion.
