Heterogenous landscape homogenised by sacrality: A case study of Gaya

Author(s): Santoshi Kumari

Abstract: This essay is an attempt to sketch a picture of physical features of a piece of land which is full of contrasts- hills, rivers, barren land, fertile tracts, plateaus and so on and so forth. The physical features do not bless the land and people with a comfortable life because of nature’s bounty, but the same piece of land experiences different religious cultures that adds vibrancy to land, draws pilgrims from all over the world and adds character to the land and brings prosperity to its inhabitants. This essay adds on to the importance of religious culture that is an overlooked and underrated aspect in academia, especially in history writings whenever the development of a region is discussed. Economy, polity, social structure, technology, metals, environment are credited to shape a land and its development but sacrality is seldom considered as a vital component in development of land and its people.
