Abstract: This paper offers an insight into the Mughal-Jesuit relations from the Mughals’ perspective. It analyses the difference between the perception and response of Akbar and Jahangir towards the Jesuits and Christianity in their court. Both Akbar and Jahangir held debates with Christian Fathers, got Christian texts written-both interpretative and translated, and commissioned paintings based on Christian themes. Still, there was a noticeable decline in all these arenas during Jahangir’s reign due to multiple reasons. Not only was there a shift in attitude, but there was also a change in subject and manner of discussion on Christianity. Jahangir made use of Christian themes more for representing the notion of the divine nature of kingship than for representing Christianity. An attempt has been made to study this interaction in all its shades including religious liberalism and diplomacy, apart from other factors which also impacted their response.
