Popular devotional music in bhakti traditions

Author(s): Ranjan Kumar and Aditi Govil

Abstract: This paper analyses how deep was the influence of music on Bhakti traditions in medieval India and how in turn, the Bhakti movements also influenced Indian music which gave rise to unique devotional music traditions across the regions of India. Devotional music transcended all boundaries of caste, region, and sect which led to bhakti gaining popularity and mass base. It accordingly traces the trajectory of devotional music across the regions where bhakti movements spread. It also studies how the practice of using the existing religious literature and popular narratives with regional musical traditions was an important factor in the enormous popularity of Bhakti traditions in India.
